21. Whom do you secretly admire?
People who appear to have dating/relationships figured out. Not a clue how they manage that.
22. What time of the day do you feel the most energetic and what do you usually do in those moments?
Midday, I think. I usually need time to ‘rev up the motor’, and I do need time to wind down at the end of the day. On a day off, midday means it’s time to leave the house and travel into the city to explore a new corner or see some art or go study at the library.
23. What’s something you never leave home without?
Notebook & pen.
24. What’s a recurring dream you have?
On occasion I dream of being back in my parents’ church with relatives around, and I’m doing things wrong, not fitting in, not being who I’m supposed to be… Wonder where that comes from…
25. What makes you feel safe?
Being with people I know well and trust, people who have proven that they really are kind, trustworthy and non-judgmental… Being in a house of prayer on retreats has been hugely helpful. Being in a place I know my way around. Faith.
26. What’s the best thing that ever happened to you?
First of all, that I had to leave my home country to complete my degree. If I had not been forced to go, where would I be now? I really, really needed to leave. And then there’s the place I arrived at – it was a gift of God to me, no matter how hard I sometimes find it to be there now, almost a decade later. It was what I needed at the time, in every way. It allowed me to open up about the past, to face my demons, to find out who I am and to become myself. Out of the fullness of God’s love, one blessing after another… It’s good to be reminded of that. God provided more than I could have asked or imagined. I don’t generally walk around answering questions with bible quotes. It’s just that it’s so true… I don’t know how I could have made it anywhere else.
27. What do you want people to say about you once you’re gone?
She made things more beautiful.
28. What’s the coolest thing about science?
That there’s no end to the exploration. No final answer, just uncountable questions.
29. What’s the best money you ever spent?
Travelling. Russia, the Lake District, Paris… Lasting priceless memories.
30. What’s a bad habit you have?
Assuming things. Whether I assume I know someone’s views or attitude before I ask them, or whether it’s assuming that others must naturally be more knowledgeable or capable than me. Assumptions are one bad habit I’d like to be rid of.
