Annie

be careful with her/

every move is distressing/

she cannot remember

the purpose of what you do

be gentle/ be kind/

and talk with her/

remind her/ every step

of the way/

that you have not

forgotten

her/even though/

more and more/

she forgets herself

remind her to swallow

in-between spoonfuls

of thickened juice/

remind her to hold on

tight when the hoist goes up/

and leave one hand on her back

where she can feel it/ let

her know she is safe/

she forgot/ or remembers

only times when she wasn’t

be careful/ be gentle/ be kind/

this human being has a life

and experience and

a soul of her own/ but slowly

forgets

give back to her what you can/

every day/

again/ again/

and be careful with her
